Celebration of Scholé is Next Tuesday
The Celebration of Scholé is a day when students bring the curriculum to life by dressing as literary characters and historical figures.
What is Scholé?
Scholé, the Greek word for "leisure," is the root of the word "school," and can be described as restful learning. Leisure is not the cessation of work, but work of another kind, work restored to its human meaning, as a celebration and a festival characterized by vigorous energy and wonder. This is the classical ideal of education which culminates in philosophy - its goal: seeking Truth.
Scholé Themes
- Kindergarten: Animals
- 1st: Fable Animals
- 2nd: Charlotte's Web
- 3rd: Ancient Rome
- 4th: Medieval Times
- 5th: Alice In Wonderland
- 6th: Greek and Roman Heroes
- 7th: The Hobbit
- 8th: Old West
- 9th: Classical Antiquity
- 10th: Medieval Chivalry
- 11th: The American Revolution
- 12th: Modern Europe (19th and early 20th c.)

A Message From the Dean of Upper Grammar School

Simplifying Singapore Training
At the Singapore Parent Training, Mrs. Sherman discussed what makes the Singapore Curriculum different from other math curricula. For example, Singapore teaches more of the "why" of concepts instead of just the "how." It also encourages critical thinking instead of just memorization. She also discussed elements of the curriculum that parents may see at home such as number bonds, manipulatives, and bar models. Mrs. Sherman finished off with some practical application of how parents can help and challenge their students at home. All of her suggestions and more are in the Parent Math Resources document. If you missed the training and would like to view it, you may view the live recording in our parent Facebook group.
